Telise day beacons

Telise day beacons

Telise day beacons are located on cape Telise on the Noarootsi peninsula.

Day beacons were tower-shaped structures on the shore or in shallow water designed to ensure safe sailing and facilitate navigation. These day beacons are unique in Estonia.

The first wooden day beacons were erected on cape Telise in 1860 to ensure safe passage for ships bound for Haapsalu. The beacons were upgraded in 1886 and new conical brash beacons were built in 1910.

The bottom beacon stands 7 m above the ground and had a square metal shield attached to the top. The top beacon is 11.9 m high and the beacons are spaced 416 m apart. A round iron shield was attached to the top of the highest beacon. Day beacons have now become obsolete from a navigational point of view.

The day beacons at Telise were placed under state protection as architectural monuments in 2004. They are privately owned and while the area cannot be accessed by car, visitors can make their way to the beacons on foot and by bike.
